Dolly for Washington Post Express

I was recently contacted by art director Adam Griffiths to illustrate a full page portrait of Dolly Parton for the Washington Post Express. This is the first illustration I've done specifically for them and the experience was great. I've been fortunate lately with some really fun jobs and this one was no exception. Adam gave me a lot of freedom to go nuts with the hair. I'm also posting some alternate versions along with the 2 original sketches.

Cover for this week's Dallas Observer

I was really excited when Art Directer Alexander Flores from Dallas Observer asked me to illustrate this cover. A lot of my favorite artists including some friends have done work for the Observer and they all had great things to say about their experiences. This was no different. Alexander was really clear in his communication and encouraging throughout the process. The story is about Joey Dauben, a small town small press guy that has big ambitions....maybe just not realistic ones : ) Alexander wanted to go with a Citizen Kane theme taking inspiration from the photo of Orson Wells standing on an endless pile of newspaper stacks. He also thought it would add some humor to make Joey a bit younger looking wearing a suit a few sizes too big. After asking my wife to pose in one of my suits standing on a few old newspapers we had, this is what I came up with. Here is the article

New Work

Below is an illustration for this month's Cincinnati Magazine about an electro rock band call Kry Kids.

Below is my entry in to Jillian Tamaki's Summer Myth contest. This is Zeus releasing Aquila to the sky. Aquila is a constellation who's stars shine the brightest in the Summer months.

This was a quick spot for Time Out New York about an expo of eclectic classes ranging from dumpster diving to Snails. The top illustration is from the sketch they selected and the bottom two I decided to ink and color because I liked them : )

July1st at MICA -Vend Send Mend

Here's a color version of my drawing for the Vend Send Mend show coming up at MICA. Each illustration somehow relates to vending machines! I highly recommend anyone in Baltimore who wants to donate 100 dollars to Japan in exchange for an original piece of art by one of many really talented artists from around the world. You can see more examples of other works at http://vendsendmend.tumblr.com/

My drawing in the show is 11x14 speedball super black ink on cold press paper.

Before the Red Paint's Dried...

This was actually yesterday's morning warm up after reading a tweet from NYT about Al Zawahiri becoming the next Bin Laden. I couldn't resist drawing him looking at the x'ed out Osama Time cover with a look of fear. It seems like the U.S. is on a roll lately with tracking down top Al Qaeda figures. OK now back to work on actual jobs....

Ali Abdullah Saleh

It's scary what's going on in Yemen. I hope the revolution ends well with the ousting of Saleh and the establishment of a real government free from Al Qaeda.

Mental Health Day

I took today off to clear my head after a long 3 months of working on some pretty time consuming jobs. They were a lot of fun to work on but I needed to take today to draw something of my choosing. I went to Huffingtonpost.com and looked for an article that would be fun to draw an illustration for. I found an article on why people in Asian countries have the strongest hair. The writer attributed the healthier hair to natural ingredients that can be found growing in the various countries. Also, because of this fact Japan was noted as being the most successful producer of hair care products. I like drawing hair and I like Asian art so I figured I'd try my best to do them both justice in a no pressure, just for fun illustration.
